The possibilities for flexibilization of conventional power plants and the challenges in respect to electricity markets and Smart Grids were especially touched upon. Both countries aim to increase the share of renewable energies in their electricity networks.

Since 2006, the high-level intergovernmental Sino-German Energy Partnership between the German BMWi and the Chinese NDRC and NEA plays a crucial role in facilitating this. Topics such as energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energies into the electricity system, as well as questions on the power market reform in both countries are addressed. Companies of both countries are included in this process and strengthen the cooperation

Germany consequently supports China in solving the challenges which the biggest energy consumer worldwide faces. According to the International Energy Association (World Energy Outlook 2015), China’s primary energy consumption is bound to double by 2040 and will by then constitute 25 % of the global consumption.
