On August 12th 2015 E.on has started officially with the construction of a modular battery storage system M5BAT on the campus of the university RWTH in Aachen, Germany. These types of storage systems are going to be an important element of the increase of renewable energies, because they are able to support the grid stability.

As the German based utility E.on has mentioned in a press release, the construction of a battery storage system with a capacity of 5 MW with a high modularity in combination with different battery technologies is planed. Therefore, the projects name is based on its purpose:  „M5BAT“ is a modular multi-megawatt multi-technology medium voltage battery storage system.

The target markets are the primary regulation markets as well as with active trading on the wholesale market.

The storage system will be based in a former office building, which will be reconstructed. In total the batteries and all their components will be stored in a two story building and on the root with a total size of 500 square meters.

On the website www.m5bat.de  more details of the construction in can be found as well as the progress of the construction.
